The Aurora Colony Historical Society

Aurora Colony Historical Society

Beginning in 1963, the Aurora Colony Historical Society has been preserving the memory and culture of the Old Aurora Colony of the 1850s. Its mission is to inspire curiosity about the heritage of the Aurora Colony and encourage interactive lifelong learning about its history.

The Old Aurora Colony Museum is a complex of five buildings consisting of the Ox Barn, Steinbach Cabin, Tie Shed, Will Family Summer Kitchen, and Kraus House. Permanent museum exhibits feature the Aurora Brass Band, Colony Church, Dr. Giesy’s drugstore, Pioneer Hotel, and the old school.

The Aurora Colony Historical Society hosts many educational programs and events throughout the year, including Aurora Colony Days held on the second Saturday in August. The 100 Strong program also takes place during the Colony Days celebration in order to keep ties to its roots and build on the community spirit evoked by remembering the loving colony.
